Thomas Riggs & Company has long been known by the known Thomas J. Riggs, Inc. The company began as just a small group of former publishing staffers who mostly used to work at Encyclopedia Britannica. Each of the members of this group had moved on to become freelancers. Each of them possessed a traditional education in publishing, but they all had a want to incorporate emerging technologies in the process. The kinship they felt for one another made working on a shared project a laudable goal, which they accomplished painstakingly at first. Today, the process is made much easier by a virtual office.
