นักวิจัยสหรัฐฯ ชี้ งานวิจัยที่ชี้ว่าโอริโอมีฤทธิ์เป็นสารเสพติดพอ ๆ กับโคเคน เป็นการด่วนสรุป เพราะการทดลองดังกล่าวยังไม่ครอบคลุม และใช้ตัวแปรที่ไม่สามารถนำมาเปรียบเทียบกันได้โดยตรง
จากที่ก่อนหน้านี้ มีผลการวิจัยของนักศึกษาจากวิทยาลัยคอนเนคติคัท ระบุว่า ขนมโอริโออาจะทำให้เกิดอาการเสพติดได้เทียบเท่ากับโคเคน จนสร้างความตื่นตระหนักให้แก่ชาวเน็ตในช่วงต้นเดือนตุลาคม
