In fact, the Canadian born chief executive, a former managing director of Ontario Parks and a board member at the Canadian Parks Council, is already planning a return visit with his family.

Mr Fauteux said being given the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular views on offer and visit areas including the refurbished Grand Canyon and the Grampians Peaks Trail were among the many highlights of his maiden visit to the Grampians.

“It was such a great experience, I was just amazed,” he said.

“We only spent half a day in the Grampians and there was a lot to cover in that short time, I will definitely be coming back soon.”

Mr Fauteux said he was particularly impressed with the upgraded facilities at the Grand Canyon. The upgrade has resulted in two new sections of handrails and one footbridge, rock works, track realignments and four stone crossings replacing many sections of aging handrails and old boardwalks.

“I am very excited about the completion of these works, which are of a very high quality,” he said.

“Visitors will now have better access in terms of getting into the Grand Canyon area to enjoy a wonderful experience. It certainly was for me.”

The Grampians Peaks Trail was also high on Mr Fauteux’s agenda.

“The views all around were spectacular. I can only imagine what they would be like on a clear day,” he said.

“One of the most pleasing aspects of the trail is that the walkways are integrated very well into the natural environment.

“Projects like the Grand Canyon upgrade and the Grampians Peaks Trail will attract a lot more tourists to the Grampians for sure.

“When the trail is complete in a few years time, it is estimated it will generate 80,000 visitor nights by 2025 and the local economic benefit that will bring to the region should be in the millions of dollars. Our goal is to finish it well and maintain it well to ensure that tourism growth continues.”
